The Need:
The Village Food Pantry initiative of the African Society Foundation was started in May of 2020 to address the urgent hunger problem faced by the elderly and single mothers in rural African communities.
During our Covid-19 community outreach missions, we discovered prevailing health and malnutrition problems in some of the areas we served. Most of the cases we encountered were pre-existing conditions, which had been exacerbated by the unintended consequences of Governmental Covid-19 mitigation efforts. Stay home orders and curfews have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable populations in these rural communities.
Without immediate nutritional and health programs in place, these communities will endure unimaginable hardships especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Our Intervention:
The African Society Foundation has partner with local organizations, community elders, and volunteers to launch Village Food Pantries in some of the communities we serve.
This collaborative community-focused project is a vital lifeline for the elderly and single mothers. By sourcing produce from local farmers and other local suppliers, we ensure that the local community is vested in the long-term sustainability of the program.
The African Society has been training local farmers, mostly women, to take up leadership roles in managing the Village Food Pantries. They also recruit and train local volunteers to conduct welfare checks and help distribute food supplies to the elderly who are unable to walk to the local pantry.
Get Involved:
The African Society Foundation is currently operating three village Pantries in Kenya and is seeking additional funding and partnerships to reach more elderly and single mothers in more rural villages and other African countries.
We are grateful for the overwhelming support from our donors, partners, and volunteers. Because of you, the African Society Foundation is providing a lasting and sustainable solution to the hunger problem among the elderly and vulnerable populations in our communities.
You can support the Village Pantry Program by making a financial donation, giving food supplies, volunteering, or holding a fundraiser in your church or community to benefit this project.
